Ryback: “At WrestleMania XXX I Was Going To Fight With The Ultimate Warrior”

The Ultimate Warrior returned to WWE in 2014 to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Before that he had not fought since 2008, when the Italian company New Wrestling Entertainment (NWE) pulled him out of a ten-year retirement to face Orlando Jordan at the Olympic Pavillion in Barcelona, Spain. This time, the Warrior won the NWE title and immediately resigned, because no longer thought to fight anymore.

However, according to Ryback, WWE plans were for him to fight the Warrior (then 51) at WrestleMania 30. He told this in his podcast Conversations with the Big Guy.

“Mark Carrano showed me an initial version of the WrestleMania poster . They already had an idea of what they wanted to do long in advance, and I noticed that Ryback was against the Ultimate Warrior. I just said, ‘cool’, but I kept thinking that because I was in my first rudo stage I probably would not be in a favorable position.

“But I was excited, because I thought it would be the WWE’s last great moment, so that would be great. I did not think I was the right guy for that task, because I did not know anything about him, I did not know how he was, whether I could fight or not, but of course I would, because I always did everything that was asked of me.

“When I was young, I adored the Ultimate Warrior, but I did not like the idea of potentially ‘giving it up’ because one can not be a mark in the fight business. That he had won would not have led to anything, and it would have been difficult for me to recover from that defeat, which surely, and by its condition, would have been after a struggle of one or two minutes. “
